Currently a total of 5.2 million people in the UK are being treated for asthma, with 1.1 million of them being children. Asthma is a condition that affects the small airways that carry air in and out of the lungs. Sufferers of asthma have sensitive airways which can easily become irritated and swollen, causing the muscles to tighten, which makes it more difficult to breathe. The cause of asthma is still not fully understood, it is believed to be partly an allergic reaction but there is also a genetic connection between asthma, hay fever and eczema which suggests that these three conditions can be inherited. There have been many recent studies that suggest that omega 3 supplements decrease inflammation and improve lung function in adults with asthma.
