Sickle Cell Anaemia (anemia) is an inherited genetic condition that affects more than 6,000 people in the UK. It can cause attacks of pain to the chest, abdomen, arms, legs and back. The condition causes abnormalities in the sufferer’s haemoglobin (the oxygen carrying protein found in red blood cells). People with the condition have sickle haemoglobin which is different from normal haemoglobin, due to the shape of the sickle red blood cells these are unable to squeeze through small blood cells, which can lead to small blood vessels becoming blocked, meaning that oxygen is unable to get through to where it is needed.
There have been many recent studies that suggest that fatty acids reduce the severity of pain in sickle cell patients.
