Boom In Sales Of 'brain Food' Oily Fish

Sales of oily fish are booming as parents are choosing 'brain food' to help boost their children's performance at school.

According to the fishing industry body 'Seafish', the demand for oily fish such as salmon, sardines and anchovies has increased by 23% in the last year, whilst mackerel sales are up 26% .

This demand for fish is an attriubute to the increased awareness of health benefits. Fish such as mackerel and salmon contains high levels of Omega 3, which is thought to improve concentration and boost IQ, seeing parents turning towards providing their children with Omega 3.

'Oil-rich fish is packed with essential fatty acids and nutrients known to help improve circulation and boost brain power', said Philip MacMullen of Seafish.

The Food Standards Agency advises that consumers eat at least two portions of fish a week, one of which should be oily.  Also in Scotland, oil-rich fish must be on menus at primary schools, at least once every three weeks.
