Consume More Omega 3 Oils And Boost Your Immune System

 An article in the Daily Mail in September 2006 reported that if we consume more Omega 3 fish oils it can boost our immune system and help fight infection.

 Dr Ann Walker, a senior lecturer in nutrition of Reading University believes that both Omega 3 and Omega 6 are vital when it comes to good health, 'The problem is we tend to eat too much Omega 6.'  You could help reduce your risk of infection by boosting your intake of Omega 3.

 

Due to our busy and hectic lifestyles we tend to eat food that contains more Omega 6, such as processed sunflower oil and certain margarines.  When really our diet should contain more Omega 3 fish oil, which is found in foods such as oily fish like mackerel and salmon. 'Taking the wrong balance of these oils is a major cause of minor illnesses,' says Dr Walker, 'an imbalance causes the immune system to go into overdrive and cause allergic responses such as a runny nose, and also reduces the immune repose to normal infections.  Omega 3 seems to normalise the immune response.'

 

Reducing your intake of Omega 6 and eating 2 portions of oily fish a week or taking an Omega 3 supplement daily may help reduce your risk of infection.
