Patients with rheumatoid arthritis are being prescribed with Folic acid, which is widely used to prevent birth defects.
It is believed taking Folic acid may lower the risk of heart disease, which is said to be higher in patients with the joint condition.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory type of arthritis that affects almost 400,000 people in the UK. It causes stiffness and joint pain, however it is less well-known for its effects on the internal organs of the body.
A patient with rheumatoid arthritis has their life shortened by 15 to 20%, according to researchers in Dundee, who are carrying out the trial.
Up to 40% of deaths are due to cardiovascular disease. Within the trial, doctors will look at the effects of the therapy on the lining of the arteries.
