An article from BBC Health News reported that scientists from Harvard have discovered why a diet high in oily fish such as mackerel and salmon could help improve inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
A new class of fats has been indentified in the human body, called resolvins which the scientists showed can control inflammation. The reslovins stop the migration of inflammatory cells to sites of inflammation and stop the turning on of other inflammatory cells. The resolvins are made from Omega 3 fatty acids, which are found in oily fish.
One form of Resolvin -E1- is believed to play a significant role in controlling inflammation. The researchers found this fat in blood samples taken from volunteers who were given Omega 3 fatty acids and apsirin.
Dr Charles Serhan, lead researcher told the BBC News, 'Since we obtained these results, I started to encourage my own children to eat foods rich in Omega 3.' A spokesperson for the Arthritis Research Campaign said, 'A number of studies ahve suggested that oily fish can help people with inflammatory arthritis, and this new study seems to confirm this.' They continue to say that, 'Our charity has also funded a small preliminary study which shows that oily fish or fish oil capsules can also play a part in reducing the pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis - a degenerative type of arthritis. We always suggested that people with arthritis eat two or three portions of oily fish a week, or take 1500mg fish oil capsules a day.'
