Omega 4 LifestyleScientists at the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans have looked back at 30 years research and as a result they say people with existing heart problems should take at least 800 to 1000mg of omega 3 each day. Healthy people should take 500mg each day.
800mg to 1000mg of omega 3 is equivalent to three/four 3oz portions of oily fish such as mackerel, tuna and herring. However The Food Standards Agency has previously voiced concerns about eating too much oil fish because of the pollutants that can build up in the body. Those that don't like fish can just take an omega 3 supplement.
Dr Carl Lavie who led the study said "this isnt just hype. We now have tremendous compelling evidence from very large studies...that demonstrates the protective benefits of omega 3 fish oil in multiple aspects of preventative cardiology. And we are talking about a very safe and relatively inexpensive therapy"
The British Heart Foundation welcomed the research "these findings could be a radical way of cutting heart attacks"
