A recent study at Linkoping University in Sweden showed that taking fish oil supplements during pregnancy might help prevent allergies in babies. The fatty acids found in fish oil are part of the Omega 3 group of fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation in the body, boost the immune system and promote a general feeling of wellbeing.
In this study 145 pregnant women took part - all of which had allergies and asthma in the family. Half were given fish oil capsules and half were given a placebo. At the age of one all the children were tested for allergies.
The researchers found that the group that were given the placebo these children had more allergic reactions to egg which is considered a good indication that they are at risk in developing allergies later in life.
