A British study has shown that essential fatty acids found in fish oil could help reduce inflammation in people with Crohn's disease.
The study tested fish oil's anti-inflammatory effects on white blood cells from patients with Crohn's disease. The researchers, wanted to see if fish oil could affect markers of inflammation in these white blood cells.
They were especially interested in two key components of fish oil: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both are omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil and have been shown to have a number of health benefits.
Participants took supplements every day for 24 weeks. Blood samples taken showed that white blood cells from the fish oil group produced fewer markers of inflammation.
Researches suggest that fish oil supplements might fight Crohn's complications beyond the digestive system.
