A new study has stated that an increased intake of omega 3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are linked to increased bone build up in young men.
78 healthy young men were recruited from sports clubs and high schools, with an average age of 16.7 at the start of the study. Their Bone Mineral Density was measured and blood samples were taken to measure blood lipid profiles.
After 7 years and 11 months lead researcher Magnus Hogstrom reported concentrations of Omega 3 fatty acids were positively linked to total BMD, spine BMD with DHA specifically mentioned to have significant positive associations with these 2 measures at the age of 22.
"Our key finding was a positive association between Omega 3 fatty acids and BMD of the total body and spine and the accumulation of BMD at the spine between 16 and 22 years of age in this cohort of healthy young men", said the researchers.
Chaim Vanek and William Connor from Oregon Health & Science University wrote,"The study by Hogstrom nicely adds to a growing body of evidence that Omega 3 fatty acids are also beneficial to bone health." They continue to say, "The attainment of peak bone mass in adolescence and the prevention of age related osteoperosis are potential positive effects of omega 3 fatty acids."
The total annual cost of osteoperosis in the UK alone is over £1.7billion, equivalent to £5million each day.
