Fish Oil Supplements For Maintenance Of Remission In Crohn's Disease

Fish oil supplements contain omega 3 fatty acids that may be beneficial in reducing inflammation, such as that seen in the bowel of Crohn's disease patients.

Randomized placebo-controlled studies that evaluated the effect of daily intake of capsules containing omega-3 fatty acids to maintain remission in Crohn's disease were reviewed.

Four studies were included of which three reported a significant reduction in the 1-year rate of disease relapse in comparison with placebo. The only study with negative results, used capsules that dissolve in the stomach, in contrast to the other positive studies that used enteric coated capsules which allowed release of the fish oil in the small bowel. When including only the three studies that used enteric coated capsules, the risk to have a clinical relapse of the bowel disease within 1 year was reduced by 31%.
