Migraine, a common severe headache that afflicts our society, may be soothed by Omega 3 fatty acids.
Epidemiological studies during the 1960's in Greenland, concluded that migraine was extremely uncommon among the Inuites. Their diet is characterised by containing very high amounts of fish in combination with meat and fat from sea mammals. The fat from these species are very high in the polyunsaturated fatty acids called Omega 3 fatty acids.
Scientists in Sweden and Denmark decided to test the possible effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids on migraine attacks.
The test in Sweden involved 41 people where, 33 people (Group A) had more than 1 attack per week and 8 people (Group B) had attacks but not so frequent. Overall the results were very positive. Group A had a 28% reduction in attacks and a reduction in intensity by 38%. They completed a 'Quality of Life' questionnaire which revealed that in Group A, 67% were significantly improved.
The Danish study involved 35 people. 21 had frequent attacks (Group C) and 14 had fewer attacks (Group D). After taking Omega 3 for three months more than half of Group C experienced fewer attacks and of 57% less intensity.
For the total group 87% answered that Omega 3 fish oil had improved their migraine condition.
The findings suggested that intake of Omega 3 fatty acids may positively affect the clinical course of migraine.
