According to US scientists getting the right balance between omega 3 fatty acids and omega 6 fatty acids will minimise bone loss.
A study published in the Journal of Nutrional Biochemistry assessed bone mineral content and bone mineral density which are used as indicators of bone mass and bone strength.
This study involved rats that had their ovaries removed, leading to a rapid drop in oestrogen levels and therefore mimicking menopause. Bone loss due to oestrogen depletion adult female rats is very similar to post menopausal women.
The rats were fed diets containing different ratios of omega-6 to omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. After 12 weeks, rats with the lowest ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in their diet experienced significantly less bone loss than rats in the other dietary groups
