Omega 4 LifestylePsoriasis is a disorder which effects the skin and joints. It causes red scaly patches to appear on the skin. These scaly patches are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production.
Psoriasis is a well know adverse effect of lithium treatment. Lithium is a medicine that is used to treat mood disorders. In a recent study, patients with Bipolar Disorder took Omega 3 supplements and reported a spontaneous reduction of psoriasis, possibly related to taking Omega 3 fatty acids.
A 59 year old woman with bipolar disorder type 2 had been taking lithium for 6 years, after 2 years of treatment she developed psoriasis on her head, legs, arms, belly and nails. After the woman started treatment with Omega 3 supplements, her psoriasis disappeared completely within 4 weeks. When she stopped taking the Omega 3 supplements her skin problems returned within a week.
A 52 year old man with bipolar disorder type 1 started taking lithium 13 years ago and developed psoriasis on his eyebrows, forehead and elbows. Within 3 weeks of taking Omega 3 the man recovered totally from his psoriasis. After discontinuing to take Omega 3, his skin remained stable for 3 months, but then his psoriasis gradually returned.
These positive findings replicate results found in other recent studies where Omega 3 fatty acids have a positive effect on people with psoriasis.
